MUSIC OFFICE PICK OF THE WEEK

http://i1.sndcdn.com/artworks-000058493054-vcrifw-original.jpg?3eddc42

I don’t know much about Nils Frahm other than that he’s from Germany and plays piano, and I know even less about modern classical in general. Apparently Frahm is a virtuoso of sorts who’s been releasing music since the mid 2000’s, but has been playing his whole life, which, uh, shows.

Look, I don’t know how to talk about this that well. The closest thing I would think to compare to is Phillip Glass, but that will probably sound dumb to people who do know about this stuff. On Frahm’s new release, he uses grand pianos and synthesizers and pulls from a bunch of live recordings to make the strange, beautiful, passionate, exhilarating record that is Spaces. Seeing as how I don’t really know how to talk about this music, but am fairly certain it’s absolutely brilliant, do yourself a favor and just listen to it.

you can buy it i swear it’s worth it i’ve listened to the whole thing three times today

New *Student Shows* of the Week!

Bossa Nova Bonanza!

November blues got you stuck in a rut? Winter jacket weighing you down? Excited for Thanksgiving but not for the hugs from your creepy Uncle Larry? Let’s face it, you need some spice in your life. And no, I’m not talking about an overpriced pumpkin spice latte. Instead, add some excitement to your life with WVKR’s new bossa nova shows, hosted by some of the jazziest cats on campus. Meeee-ow!

Bossa Nova and So Much More!

Tuesdays 9-10 am

Enjoy a post breakfast pick-me-up with DJs John Tapscott and Mad Cow. Featuring bossa nova and other latin jazz, with surprises of both contemporary beats and earlier influences. Be prepared to dance the morning away! Just remember that strangers may stare if you try to samba down the sidewalk. Oh well.

Planeta Tropicalia

Wednesdays 1-2 pm

While DJ Glitter shines brighter than the sun, DJ Showtime Gordon soothes your achey breaky heart with his mellow vocal chords. Their take on Brazilian jazz will be sure to make your lunch hour more satisfying than that sad excuse for a sandwich you plan on eating.

TUNE IN! And also call in to thank our awesome new DJ’s for all of their hard work! (845) 437-7178.

New Student Shows of the Week!

This year’s new programming includes some electronic shows that can quite possibly take you to a new dimension. This isn’t the type of electronic that you’d hear at a German Techno Club (however there is a mug night next Thursday for Vassar students featuring German techno, DJ’ed by our own GoldmanSnacks and A-Lexus). Instead, these two shows send out mellow vibes and trance-like radio waves. Spooky.

The Moon Room with DJ Moon Cup and DJ Buzzlightqueer

Wednesdays at 2 pm

Take a midday break and chill out with some tasteful soundscapes. Electroacoustic combines with natural elements to create an immersive atmosphere that may just drown you in relaxation. Be sure to wear a life jacket.

Field Recordings of the Mind with DJ Rad Banana

Saturdays at 1 am

End your Friday nights (okay, technically Saturday morning…) right with Rad Banana. Minimal electronic featuring artists like Burial and Four Tet who will gently rock you to sleep after the busy week you just had. Yes, you. You are special. You deserve this.

Be sure to tune in!
