New Music Blast for 2/13

Hey WVKR DJs and those interested as well,

As a new feature of WVKR.org we, your music directors Elodie and Darius, will begin to post our top selections from the current week’s music blast to let you in on what great music has just hit our playlist.

So here it is, the best music on the charts this week:

MD PICK OF THE WEEK: TONSTARTSSBANDHT “Maihama” [Does Are] – CASSETTE. One side is more of the ecstatic gleeful fare of beach boys acid reverb fun, the other side is composed almost completely of ducktails-induced vocal reverbs approaching a halfway point between Mr. Mondanile and Julianna Barwick.

ELODIE’S PICK OF THE WEEK: MOON DUO “Escape” [Woodsist]– Moon Duo counts such variant groups as Silver Apples, Royal Trux, Moolah, Suicide, and Cluster as touchstones. Utilizing primarily guitar, keyboards, percussion, and vocals, the pair plays space against form to create a primordial and disorienting sonic stew.

DARIUS’ PICK OF THE WEEK: PANTHA DU PRINCE “Black Noise” [Rough Trade] – This album sort of deconstructs micro house into a delicate rhythm, filled with chimes and bells and soft sounds like that. Brooding, yet soft, bass builds and ebbs over half 4/4 half broken beats, but its all a synthesis of great sound.

SOME OTHER GREAT ADDS:

THE ART MUSEUMS “Rough Frame” [Woodsist] – This psychedelic post punk duo from San Fran take an interesting approach to new wave with the help of a vintage Tascam 388 tape machine and a knack for lo-fi quality sound. Vintage equipment = vintage sound.

JAZZ JAZZIST “One Armed Bandit” [Ninja Tune] – Very ecclectic, so very hard to describe. The Norwegians themselves cite influences such as: Steve Reich, My Bloody Valentine, Fela Kuti, Dungen, Jean Claude Vannier, Tortoise, Cornelius, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, and MGMT

CLINKER “On the Other Side…(for L. Cohen)” [Dragon’s Eye] – This single piece had its origin as a live cinema performance comissioned by the Leonard Cohen International Festival 2008. Using Cohen’s voice as a point of departure, Clinker deconstructs and reassembles Cohen’s voice into dreamy soundscapes.

CORREY FULLER “Seas Between” [Dragon’s Eye] – A wonderful example of Laptop Music, which falls into the genre of Modern Classical- ambient soundscapes, field recordings, laptop constructions, and actual classical instrumentation.

GIL SCOTT-HERON “I’m New Here” [XL] – This dude is described as “a Vietnam-era Langston Hughes, a proto-rap pioneer, and — offensively but not inaccurately — the black Bob Dylan.” Poetry and mellow multi-genre mayhem/love farce?

PHANTOGRAM “Eyelid Movies” [Barsuk] – This incorporates hip hop beats and electronic loops but also has a shoegazey side.

ABSOLUTE POLYSICS “Polysics” [Ki/oon] – Japan and their zany uper-pop/new wave lunacy. Violently energetic chemical concoction of fractured punk and 8 bit bitty bits.
